Unsigned Heavy Metal Band Sent To Play For American Troops In Middle East
August 28, 2003Will Jordan of NashvilleCityPaper.com reports that on May 8, unsigned heavy metal band GENEVA became the first artists the Department of Defense and Armed Forces Entertainment sent to play for American troops in the Middle East since Operation Iraqi Freedom began, according to the band.
"The Gallatin-based, leather-wearing 'hair band,' comprised of Geneva Keene (lead vocals),her brother Rusty Keene (guitar/vocals),Gary Craig (keys/bass/vocals) and Dwayne Jones (drummer/producer) resides in Gallatin and felt an obligation to the young men in the military who were making sacrifices to fight for their country.
"Geneva herself has two nephews serving in the military, and drummer Dwayne Jones has a relative in the 101st Airborne, according to the band.
" 'We were shocked when we got the call that we were the first ones to be going over there,' Jones said. 'It was great. At the time, no one was getting into Iraq, if they weren't in the army. Now, lots have been there to perform.'
"GENEVA, whose buxom blond-haired singer has been described as a combination of Lita Ford and Tanya Tucker, is used to touring (they've shared stages with ALICE COOPER, TESLA, BILLY RAY CYRUS and CONFEDERATE RAILROAD),but nothing prepared them for their trip overseas.
"The tour lasted 27 days carrying them through 11 countries in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
"We just played for U.S. forces and their allies. All of the staging areas were where troops were flying in and out of Iraq,' Jones said." Read more.
